Beads: buy by code, stock by quantity
Beads are sold in bags, most commonly 1,000 per bag, sorted by color code. Buy by code, never by color name, because names are inconsistent between brands and sometimes within one brand: the same pale blue may be a completely different code elsewhere, and one code may carry different names in different lines. The code printed on the packaging is the only reliable identifier.

The bigger the board, the easier it is to knock beads out of place, and the harder it is to move or store partway through.
Buy at least two boards of the same format. The reason is practical: once a board is full you must fuse it before continuing, and a second board lets you keep placing beads while the first cools. Multiple boards of the same format also combine into a larger working area.
Tweezers, sorting trays, and storage
Tweezers are the tool you will use most. Beads are only 2.6 mm to 10 mm across, which makes placing one into a dense area by hand impractical, especially when you need to replace a single bead already on the board. Choose fine-tipped tweezers with steady grip; 12 to 15 cm is a comfortable length.
Curved tweezers are easier for dense areas because your hand does not block the view of the board, while straight tweezers are better for lifting a single bead out of a tray and setting it precisely. If budget allows, keep both and switch by task: curved for filling large areas, straight for corrections. Avoid jewellery pliers and very sharp eyebrow tweezers, whose tips bite into the bead wall and leave marks that survive ironing.
Sorting trays and storage boxes are about efficiency. Pouring a 1,000-bead bag onto a table sends beads everywhere, whereas a compartmented tray lets you lay out a dozen colors at once, and a lidded box organised by code makes the next session faster. Store beads away from direct sunlight and heat, since the plastic deforms at high temperatures.
A bead pen is another optional tool: it picks up a bead with a slightly tacky tip and drops it onto a peg, which suits large solid areas and continuous placement where the aim is speed. Tweezers remain better for precisely adjusting a single bead and for working inside a dense region. Ironing paper: never skip it, choose substitutes carefully
Ironing paper sits between the iron and the beads. It stops plastic sticking to the soleplate and spreads heat evenly across the pattern, which is why one pass fuses the whole board rather than only the area directly under the iron. Kits usually include a stack, and replacements are bought separately once it wears out, so note the size you need before the last sheet is gone.
Ironing paper is reusable until it wrinkles, yellows, or tears. The test is whether it still lies flat over the pattern: once it has creases, those creases are pressed into the surface of the finished piece and cannot be removed. Rotate several sheets between projects so wear spreads evenly, and store them flat rather than folded, since folding is the fastest way to create exactly the creases you are trying to avoid.
When restocking, size matters more than sheet count. The paper has to cover the whole pegboard with margin to spare, because a sheet that is too small lets the iron slide onto bare plastic and melt the board itself. Measure your largest board before ordering and allow a few centimetres of overhang on every side: a sheet that looks generous on a 14×14 board is far too small for a 57×57 one.
Silicone-coated baking parchment is the standard substitute, because it is heat resistant and releases cleanly in the same way. Iron and work surface
An ordinary household steam iron is fine, but the steam must be switched off and the reservoir emptied before ironing beads. Steam heats the beads unevenly and introduces moisture into a material that is being softened, which is one of the common causes of curling and of pieces that fuse on one side but not the other. Wait for the iron to stop venting entirely after you turn the dial, since some models release residual steam for a few seconds.
Use the medium heat setting. The assembly sheet exported by this tool uses medium heat and about 15 seconds per side. Treat that as a starting point only: iron thermostats vary widely, the real temperature lands somewhere between 150 °C and 200 °C, and bead thickness also changes the fusing rate. Before using a setting on a real project, test it on a dozen spare beads.
Keep the soleplate clean. Burnt residue from earlier fabric use transfers to the ironing paper and then to the surface of the piece as shiny brown marks that cannot be wiped off. Check the soleplate before every session, and wipe it with a damp cloth once it has cooled. If the iron is also used for household laundry, clean it before bead work rather than afterwards.
Work over a hard, heat-resistant surface. Ironing presses downward and a soft table lets the pegboard flex, so the finished piece comes out uneven and may take on a curve that no amount of later pressing removes. Avoid sinks and glass worktops as well, since they are vulnerable to heat or to a dropped iron, and cover a wooden table with a board rather than a cloth, whose folds print their texture into the piece.
Estimating quantities by project size
Start from the material list. Exporting a pattern generates the required bead count per color, which is your buying basis. The number on the list equals the number of cells of that color in the pattern, so it converts straight into bags: divide by the pack size and round up. Treat the list as a shopping list rather than an estimate, because it is exact, and treat your own handling as the uncertain part.
Add 5 to 10 percent on top of the list. Loss comes from beads dropped during placement, deformed under pressure, stuck to the ironing paper, or simply mislaid during assembly, and small pieces lose a larger share because they start from a smaller total. If a color appears only a handful of times, round it up to a full bag, since loose beads are not sold individually.
As a worked example: a fully filled 29×29 standard board is 841 beads, a 14.5 cm square in 5 mm beads. Made in two colors split evenly, that is roughly 420 black and 420 white, so at 1,000 beads per bag, one bag of each covers two such pieces. Small projects clearly do not need a large color stock.
