How to Iron Perler Beads: Temperature, Timing, One Side or Two

Ironing is the only irreversible step in fuse beads. A mislaid bead can be moved; an over-ironed hole stays flat. There is no single correct temperature because household irons are calibrated very differently and bead thickness changes how fast the surface fuses. This article gives a procedure you can follow, a clear test for when to stop, and a specific fix for each common failure.

What ironing actually does: fusing neighbouring surfaces

Ironing does not melt beads into liquid. It softens the surfaces where beads touch so they bond, and when the piece cools they hold together as one object. A good result keeps every hole clearly visible while the beads form a continuous sheet: the face that was not pressed shows the individual outlines, and the ironed face is flatter.

That requires two conditions at once. There must be enough heat for the contact points to fuse, and not so much that the beads collapse. Ironing longer does not make a piece stronger; it flattens the holes and thins the edges. Ironing too briefly leaves loose beads that never joined.

Two signals tell you when to stop. Looking through the ironing paper, the gaps between beads have closed and the pattern reads as one surface. When you lift the paper, the edges have not curled and no beads come up with the paper. Once both are true, stop; there is nothing to gain by going over it again.

Setting the temperature: medium heat, no steam, test first

Nearly every manufacturer's advice reduces to one line: medium heat, no steam. On a household iron with fabric markings, that lands somewhere around 150 °C to 200 °C, a range wide enough that it names the category rather than the setting. The assembly sheet exported by this tool uses medium heat with about 15 seconds per side, which is a starting point rather than a specification.

That number should not be applied blindly. Iron thermostats vary a great deal, and the same dial position can differ by tens of degrees between machines. Bead material and thickness matter as well: mini 2.6 mm beads are much thinner than maxi 10 mm and over-iron far sooner at the same setting. Treat temperature and time as ranges, and let a test piece decide.

Testing takes under a minute. Place a dozen beads of the size you are using on a board, iron them with the setting and duration you intend to use, and let them cool. If the holes are already flat, drop one setting or shorten the pass. If nothing stuck at all, go up one setting or add a few seconds. Doing this first is what prevents ruining a finished pattern.

Paper and tools: ironing paper, parchment, and what never to use

Always keep a sheet between the iron and the plastic. The sheet supplied with bead kits is usually called ironing paper: a heat-resistant release paper that stops beads sticking to the soleplate and spreads heat evenly across the pattern. It is not a disposable consumable in the usual sense, since one sheet lasts many projects, but it does wear out. It gradually takes on the texture of the beads pressed through it, and eventually that texture starts appearing on new pieces.

Ironing paper is reusable until it wrinkles, yellows, or tears. The practical test is whether it still lies flat over the pattern: once it has creases, those creases are pressed into the surface of the finished piece. Replace a sheet as soon as it starts to curl at the edges, because a curled edge lets the iron touch the plastic underneath and scar the pegboard.

The most common substitute is silicone-coated baking parchment, which is equally heat resistant and non-stick. Check the label, because waxed paper looks similar on the shelf and behaves very differently under heat. Never use ordinary wax paper, wax-coated paper, or cling film: the wax or film melts and sticks to both the beads and the iron, and the residue is hard to remove from a finished piece.

Use an iron with the steam function switched off and the reservoir emptied. Steam heats the beads unevenly and introduces moisture that encourages curling. Keep the soleplate clean, since burnt residue transfers to the paper and then to the surface of the piece. Finally, work over a hard, heat-resistant surface: ironing presses downward, so a soft table lets the pegboard flex and the finished piece come out uneven.

One side or both sides

Single-sided ironing fuses one face only. That side becomes smooth while the other keeps each bead outline and open hole, which preserves the strongest pixel look. The trade-off is lower strength: edges can be pulled apart fairly easily, so this suits display pieces that go in a frame or on a fridge.

Double-sided ironing flips the piece and fuses the second face as well. The result is thicker, more resistant to bending, and better suited to keychains, coasters, and anything handled often. The cost is that holes on both faces shrink, the piece reads more like a sheet of plastic, and the pixel character weakens noticeably.

A middle path is to fuse the first side lightly, confirm the edges will hold, then turn the piece over and iron the second side briefly. Another common approach is to lay the piece on a flat surface, cover it with paper, and press it flat under a weight while it cools, adding no further heat.

The full procedure, step by step

First, arrange the pattern on the pegboard and check that every bead sits squarely on its peg. A tilted bead leaves a slanted oval after ironing that cannot be corrected, so this check is worth doing twice, finishing with a light pass of your fingers across the board to feel for anything standing proud. Photograph the finished layout before you start ironing: if the paper dislodges any beads, that photo is the only reliable record of where they belonged.

Second, cover the pattern completely with ironing paper, leaving margin so the iron cannot slide onto bare plastic. Preheat the iron to your chosen setting with steam off, set the soleplate flat on the paper, and move it in slow, even circles. Never park it in one spot and never press with the tip.

Third, work in short passes of 5 to 10 seconds per area, lifting the paper between passes to check how far the fusion has progressed. Once the whole pattern is fused, let the piece cool completely while it is still on the pegboard. While it is warm the plastic is soft, and lifting it then will pull the pattern out of shape.

Fourth, once cool, remove it from the board, turn it over and repeat if you are doing a double-sided fuse, then press it flat under a weight. Cooling is the step people skip most often: while a piece is still warm, do not judge its shape, do not bend it, and do not trim the edges.

Common failures and how to fix them

Only one of these problems is truly irreversible: holes pressed completely flat, turning the beads into a slab. At that point the pixel character is gone and the options are to keep it as a flatter object or start again. Everything else on the list can be recovered, which is why the practical advice is to stop ironing early rather than late: an under-fused piece can be ironed again, while an over-fused one cannot be undone.

Curling and loose beads can both be rescued. Curling usually comes from uneven heating between the two faces: the ironed side contracts more than the untouched side, so the piece rolls upward as it cools. Put it back on the board, cover it, iron the other face briefly at low heat, then press it flat until fully cool. For loose beads, re-iron only the affected area for a few seconds, taking care not to over-iron the parts that already fused.

Shiny scorch marks usually mean a dirty soleplate or too much heat. Clean the soleplate and drop one setting before continuing, otherwise the next pass produces more of them. The mark itself cannot be removed, but you can turn it to the back of the piece, or cover it with a small bead detail if it sits in a plain area of the pattern.

  • Over-ironed (holes flat): irreversible. If it is mild, iron the other side briefly at low heat so both faces contract similarly and the curl eases; otherwise rebuild.
  • Curling: usually uneven heat or no weight while cooling. Return it to the board, cover and iron the other side briefly, then press flat under a weight until completely cool.
  • Collapsed holes: too much heat or staying in one spot. Drop one setting, keep the iron moving in circles, and use short passes with checks in between.
  • Stuck to paper: do not peel it warm. Let it cool completely, then work from a corner. Pick off paper residue with tweezers, not a fingernail.
  • Loose beads at the edge: not enough heat. Cover and re-iron only the loose area for a few seconds without re-ironing the fused parts.
  • Shiny or scorched surface: dirty soleplate or excessive heat. Clean the soleplate and lower the setting by one step.

Finishing and caring for a fused piece

After ironing, press the cooled piece for a while longer. A common method is to sandwich it between two flat boards under a few books for ten minutes or so. This flattens it further and makes it less likely to curl again when the piece gets warm or damp, and it also exposes any spot where the fusion is weaker than it looks, since a loose bead will shift under the load.

Finished pieces dislike heat. A hot car in summer, a radiator, or a sunlit windowsill can all soften the beads enough to deform them, and once the piece cools in a deformed position that shape is fixed. Treat the piece like any plastic object: keep it away from high temperatures, avoid long-term load, and do not wipe it with alcohol or solvents, which dull the surface.

If you are attaching hardware, do it once the piece is fully cooled and set. Hot glue, double-sided tape, magnet sheets, and keyrings all work, as long as the bonding surface is clean and dust-free. Adhesive-backed fittings lose grip in cold conditions, so for long-term use prefer hot glue or hardware that passes through a hole.
